Hey, you said the bearings were most worn in one spot, what if I just remove one race, rotate it 90 degrees and put it back?

Sell the bike and get something with pedals. Right now.

No, seriously, just considering the amount of work that goes in to suspending the bike, removing stuff to get at the bearings, getting them out (that can be a royal bitch, especially if they're rusty) and putting everything together, it's just stupid to skip the actual changing part. Plus, it won't work. Even if the current damage to the race surface is pretty much local, the whole thing is going to be full of rust particles and other miscellaneous dirt that will make sure that you'll be back in there in no time. If you had caught them early, you could have gotten away with just greasing them thoroughly, but it's too late for that unless you find a bike that's been misplaced in its shipping crate since -97.
