I've lost the keys to my later model ('95 - later) GPZ, and I don't have a spare! What do I do?

Don't panic! It's relatively easy to have a key cut from "code" on the GPZ. The code is a alphanumeric series that tells a locksmith how to cut the key. Locksmiths also keep guides that tell them which key blank to use for a given bike model. The code is normally a letter followed by four digits: for example, "Z5160". The trick, however, is finding the code.

Here's a few techniques:

1. Look through the documentation that came with your bike. It's possible that the dealer recorded the key code on their inspection sheet, or some of the other paperwork.

2. Try calling your dealer who sold you the bike. It's possible that your dealer has the code recorded on file.

3. If you can't find the number by searching your records or contacting the dealer, you can find the code stamped on one of the lock cylinders. The easiest lock cylinder to remove is the seat lock (bike's left side). Don't try to remove the ignition cylinder unless you really need too, as it's a lot harder to do than it looks, and the key code is not readily stamped on the ignition cylinder, anyways.
